5 tips from Guy for finding the perfect hotel in New York

New York is a highly intense city, with a vast abundance of attractions and points of interest, wide boulevards, world-class museums, elite restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. All that Manhattan has to offer is concentrated on a small, very intense island with endless possibilities and things to do around the clock.

When visiting New York, it's best to find accommodations in Manhattan, despite the high cost. The ideal location is as close as possible to Times Square and Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, where the main nightlife, shopping, and quality hotels are situated.

Guy's Tips
  1. Hotel Level – Hotels in New York are generally decent to good, unlike the hotels in other US cities, which are better. There are renovated or new hotels, and of course, many are quite dated. Since accommodation prices in Manhattan are critical, you might need to compromise on the hotel level and look for places that are both good and budget-friendly, or slightly out of the way, or have older but still decent facilities.
  2. Location, Location, Location – While your location in Manhattan is important, it's not critical. You can stay in Brooklyn or western Queens and take the subway to central Manhattan each morning, which is about a 10-minute ride. It's still preferable to stay in Manhattan, if not Midtown, then in satellite neighborhoods like Greenwich Village, Soho, or even Chinatown.
  3. The Season – New York is a city that's buzzing all year round. Even in winter, there's a peak in tourism around Christmas, and there's still a lot of tourist activity afterward. Despite the cold and snow, the city has a special winter charm. Winter is the most affordable season in terms of accommodation prices, and you might even find a good deal at the really great hotels in Midtown. During peak season, from spring to mid-fall, the city gets pricey, so it's a good idea to book your accommodation well in advance.
  4. Public Transportation in Manhattan – Manhattan boasts excellent public transportation, including both the subway lines and the MTA bus lines. The subway and buses are easy and convenient to use and aren't too expensive. They allow you to spread out across Manhattan in search of accommodation (don’t head too far north and definitely not beyond 110th Street).

How to Find Accommodation in New York?

  • Manhattan has an insane amount of hotels of all levels and types
  • The hotels and lodging places in New York are very diverse, including outrageously expensive luxury hotels, excellent boutique hotels with four-star ratings, good (and sometimes not so good) three-star hotels, AirB&B apartments, and various hostels, some of which can also be quite decent
  • Accommodation in New York is divided among the various neighborhoods of Manhattan with the option to leave the island and stay in Brooklyn or Queens at more affordable rates
  • Generally speaking, the heart of Manhattan and New York is Times Square, where the city's nightlife is concentrated, along with a large number of hotels.

How to find a family-friendly place to stay in New York?

  • New York, especially Manhattan, is a city with challenging and exceptionally expensive real estate, which greatly impacts the nature of its hotels.
  • Often, the city's hotels offer rooms that are not large (to say the least), especially compared to almost any hotel or motel across the USA where rooms are generally huge (with two queen or king beds).
  • A significant number of the city's hotels offer only double rooms, and if you want to stay with children, you'll need to book two rooms.
  • If you plan to come with the kids, it's actually worth booking a spot at the more expensive hotels. These hotels are rated four stars and above, with rooms that can accommodate children (because most rooms are larger than those in three-star hotels). The cost of the room in the expensive hotel is offset, of course, by the price of renting two rooms or the mental expense of staying with kids in a room approximately 20 square meters in size

Staying in the Outer Boroughs

  • A convenient lodging option in New York is finding a place to stay outside of Manhattan, but with a clear orientation towards it
  • Manhattan is well-connected to the boroughs beyond the East River, both with Queens and Brooklyn. The subway ride from western Queens to Midtown is just a few minutes, the same time it takes to travel from Downtown Brooklyn to Downtown Manhattan
  • Because of this, several great hotel areas have developed across the East River, close to subway stations. These hotels offer easy access to Manhattan (in just a few minutes) but at outer borough prices.
